GridCars launches R99 subscription that turns home charging into public-charging rewards

New programme allows EV drivers to earn R1 in charging rewards for every verified kilowatt-hour charged at home—including energy supplied by their own solar systems

Johannesburg, South Africa – August 2026 — GridCars has announced a new EV driver subscription programme that connects home charging with public charging, giving electric vehicle owners an opportunity to earn rewards every time they charge at home.

Under the programme, customers earn R1 in public-charging rewards for every verified 1 kWh charged at home. The rewards can be redeemed at any GridCars public charging locations.

The planned standard subscription price is R299 per month. As part of the launch offer, customers who register during August 2026 will pay R99 per month for at least their first six subscription months, with the first subscription month beginning in September 2026.

Charge at home. Earn for the road.

The programme is designed to bring the customer’s home and public-charging experience together through one connected platform.

Home-charging activity is securely verified using charger telemetry and certified meter data. Qualifying energy includes electricity supplied from the grid as well as electricity generated by the customer’s own solar installation, provided the energy is delivered through the registered charger and can be verified by the GridCars platform.

GridCars CEO Winstone Jordaan said the programme gives EV owners additional value from charging infrastructure they already use every day.

“Most EV charging takes place at home, but the customer’s home and public-charging experiences have traditionally remained separate. This programme connects the two. Every verified kilowatt-hour charged at home contributes towards the customer’s next public-charging session.”

How the programme works

Customers follow a simple five-step process:

  1. Join the GridCars subscription programme.
  2. Register their qualifying home charger and ensure that it remains connected.
  3. Charge their registered vehicle at home.
  4. Earn R1 in public-charging rewards for every verified kilowatt-hour.
  5. Redeem the accumulated rewards at eligible GridCars charging locations.

The programme requires a smart, OCPP-connected charger model approved by GridCars and supported by an installed MID-certified electricity meter. Charger approval takes place at the charger-model level rather than for each individual customer installation.

Customers who do not already have a compliant charger will be able to purchase one from GridCars or through participating vehicle manufacturers and approved charging-equipment suppliers.

Registration

Registrations for the launch offer will open during August 2026.

Customers who register during the launch period will pay no more than R99 per month for at least the first six subscription months, beginning in September 2026.

Further registration details, compatible charger information and full programme terms will be published by GridCars ahead of the launch.
